One of many great things about our Centre for Entertainment Arts (CEA) is the hands-on learning students get through real-world projects, like these CEA marketing videos.
It’s all in the details.
Before shooting could start, many technical decisions had to be made.

Cameras

To give the videos a sci-fi feel, anamorphic lenses had been selected for their cinematic aspect ratio and light-flaring effect. However, given the time they can add to post-production involving VFX, a pivot was made to the more clinical aesthetic and limited distortion of spherical lenses, keeping the tight schedule on track.

To achieve visual cohesion between elements shot on location and visual effects created in post-production, a lens chart was used. With this chart as a guide, the VFX team could apply the appropriate lens characteristics to created assets, ensuring they appeared the same in the on-screen environment as assets shot with a camera.

Action

Just as lens choice took VFX workflow into consideration, so did decisions about camera and subject movement. When compositing or masking was involved in a shot, it was best that the camera was either locked off or moving slowly in a single direction. Subjects that needed to interact with a VFX asset would work best if they had little to no movement at all.

Lights

As it was important to transport viewers into the mood of each video, a mix of ambient, practical, RGB, bicolour, and daylight LED lighting was used. This allowed the team to shape, stylize, and control each hero’s environment. The creation of a specific colour theme for each of the three stories helped to pop the elements within scenes and add vibrancy.

Astronaut: Blue/Purple
Dinosaur: Yellow/Green
Racer: Red/Blue

Art Direction

To execute the vision of the Bow Valley College marketing team, BVC alum, Liz Nandee, of Basic Black Designs in Calgary, was brought on to lead set design. With two decades of industry experience and a phenomenal eye for detail, Liz and her assistant were able to conceptualize and build multiple environments tailored to our video heroes at specific stages in life; from childhood make-believers to teenage make-it-happeners.

Sets were outfitted with props that took the smallest of details into consideration, wardrobe was selected, and all of it was coordinated with lighting colours to give each environment a holistic feel.
